Local to climb mountain

From the Penarth Times, first published Thursday 24th Feb 2005.

A PENARTH student is walking up Mount Snowdon to help raise money for people in Tanzania.

Former Stanwell pupil Graham Craig, now in the final year of a French and Politics degree at the University of Nottingham, is raising money for The Tanzania Education Project.

The project aims to raise cash for a further education centre in the Monduli district of the country.

Graham said: "The project is designed to increase the educational opportunities available for young adults of the Maasai people in Meserani, Tanzania so that they can take advantage of the new employment opportunities that have arisen from increased tourism in the area.

"We have been fundraising since September but still need thousands of pounds if we are to make this happen.

"I would like to make clear that any donation made would go directly to the funds needed to build the centre.

"I will be doing a sponsored walk up Snowdon in early April and would greatly appreciate any sponsorship."

Volunteers have to find 1,000 of their own money to cover flights and living expenses. The Tanzania Education Centre will provide Swahili and English classes with more vocational classes to be added in the near future. There will also be a library for private study and a separate study area.

Graham will travel to Tanzania in the summer as a volunteer, when he will help in building activities, train local people on how to make the most of the centre's resources and take part in HIV awareness programmes.

The project targets young adults within the Maasai culture who have missed the opportunity of education due to the imposition of fees during the time when they would have been eligible to attend school.

Graham said: "A whole generation of young adults have been deprived of the opportunity of a basic education.
